Solid wood furniture does not require much from you. But what it does require, it requires consistently. The pieces in your home have been made to last a lifetime — potentially several lifetimes. Whether they fulfil that promise depends largely on a handful of habits that, once established, take almost no effort at all.

This guide covers everything you need to know. We have written it for people who have never owned solid wood furniture before, and for people who have owned it for years and want to make sure they are doing things correctly.

Understanding How Wood Behaves

Solid wood is a living material. Even after it has been milled and finished, it continues to respond to its environment — expanding slightly in humid conditions, contracting in dry ones. This is not a defect. It is the nature of the material, and it is why solid wood furniture, unlike its engineered alternatives, lasts.

The joinery in every MM piece is designed to accommodate this movement. The mortise and tenon joints, the dovetails, the careful alignment of grain direction across joined pieces — all of these are engineering decisions that allow the wood to move without the piece failing. Your job is simply not to expose the furniture to conditions so extreme that the movement exceeds what the joinery can accommodate.

Daily Care

For day-to-day maintenance, less is more. Wipe surfaces with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For spills — including hot liquids — wipe immediately with a clean, soft cloth that is very slightly damp, then dry with a clean dry cloth. That is all that is needed. The Piano Finish is designed to handle everyday household situations without staining, but standing liquid on any wood surface should always be wiped away promptly.

We do not recommend using wood cleaners, furniture sprays, or any cleaning products on your MM pieces. A soft, slightly damp cloth handles almost everything. For anything that genuinely concerns you — a stubborn mark, a surface question — contact the Furniture Spa rather than reaching for a product. Placement and Environment
Direct sunlight will fade timber over time — all timber, regardless of finish. If your furniture is positioned near a window that receives strong direct sunlight, consider a blind or curtain for the midday hours, or rotate the arrangement periodically to ensure any fading is even rather than localised.

Similarly, position your furniture away from direct heat sources: air conditioning vents, radiators, and heating elements. The localised drying effect of direct heat on one part of a piece can cause differential movement that stresses the joints over time.

"The greatest enemy of solid wood furniture is not use — it is neglect. A piece that is used, dusted, and kept away from extremes will outlast anything."

Polishing

MM furniture with a Piano Finish does not require polishing. The finish itself provides all the protection and lustre the surface needs. A soft, slightly damp cloth is all you should ever need for routine surface care.

If you notice the surface looking dull over time, do not reach for a polish or wax product — contact the Furniture Spa instead. A professional assessment will tell you whether the surface needs attention and what the right solution is. Self-applied products, particularly wax-based polishes, can build up on the finish and reduce its clarity over time. The Furniture Spa is the right resource for anything beyond a wipe-down. Upholstered Pieces
For sofas, chairs, and other upholstered items, the fabric requires the same consideration as the timber frame. Rotate cushions regularly to ensure even wear. Blot spills immediately — never rub, which spreads the stain and works it deeper into the fabric. For any fabric concern, contact the Furniture Spa for advice before attempting a home treatment that might set the stain permanently.

The solid wood elements of upholstered pieces — legs, arms, visible frames — can be cared for as described above.

What Not to Do

The following will damage solid wood furniture regardless of finish quality: placing very hot items directly on surfaces for extended periods, dragging items across the surface, leaving surfaces wet for more than a few minutes, and placing the piece in a room where the humidity swings dramatically without any climate control.

None of these are unusual household situations. They are simply worth being aware of, because the solution in each case is simple: use a mat for hot items on wood, lift rather than drag, and dry spills promptly with a soft cloth.
